Don't Cut your Post Brackets | How to Install Post Brackets
Hello, fellow Barn Geeks! It's your guide here, diving deep into the heart of American craftsmanship with a tutorial that's as sturdy and reliable as the barns we dream of building. Today, we're not just talking about any barns; we're talking about creating a legacy with your own hands, using plans and hardware kits that are proudly made in the USA. I'm here to walk you through the process of building your own post and beam barn, or a modified timber frame structure, with a focus on our U bracket - a cornerstone of our barn building approach here at barngeek.com.
Our U bracket, designed with precision and care, features six slots (not just holes!) to provide you with flexibility and strength in attaching your posts to the foundation. This innovation means you can secure your barn's foundation with confidence, using just two wedge anchors but with six strategic options for placement. This versatility ensures that, whether you're working on a standard installation or tackling a corner, your barn's integrity is paramount.
In this video, I'm not just showing you how to use the U bracket; I'm sharing the wisdom of years spent perfecting barn designs that withstand the test of time and nature. You'll see firsthand how to navigate corners without sacrificing the stability of your structure, ensuring your girts attach seamlessly and your barn stands strong against the elements.
Drawing from a rich tradition of American barn building, I've tailored this tutorial to those who cherish the value of hard work and the pride of a job well done. This isn't just about building barns; it's about fortifying the American dream, one beam at a time. And because we believe in the importance of keeping it local, every plan and kit we offer is made right here in the USA, supporting our economy and ensuring quality you can trust.
I invite you to join me at barngeek.com, where we've laid out a comprehensive Post and Beam Barn Building course that's entirely free. Just register with your name and email, and you'll gain access to a treasure trove of video lessons and written guides that complement this tutorial, diving deeper into the art and science of barn building.
As we navigate each step together, from ensuring a clean and level foundation to mastering the placement of each U bracket, remember that this journey is about more than just constructing a building. It's about crafting a testament to American resilience, ingenuity, and spirit.
So, whether you're a seasoned builder or embarking on your first project, I'm here to support you every step of the way. Together, we'll bring your vision to life, building not just barns, but a legacy of American craftsmanship. Visit us at barngeek.com, where your barn building adventure begins. Let's roll up our sleeves and get to work, creating something truly American, truly durable, and truly yours.

    It is most likely the Emerald Ash Borer, a destructive beetle that tunnels under the bark, disrupting the tree’s nutrient flow. Infestations can weaken the tree and make it susceptible to disease.

    this mill will still be running after your 4th woodmizer. Many old Fricks and Corley mills sawed one half million feet per year since the fifties and still could produce 5000 feet a day .

    This is interesting being I have a lot of very big EWP. I was told not to expose the WP to the elements because it s not very rot resistant? Also I was told not to use it in load bearing due to the number of weak spots from branching in the wood? For obvious reason I want to use the WP.

    • @BarnGeek
      @BarnGeek 22 дні тому

      The trick is to install it so that it can shed water, like board and batten siding. It will of corse rot away eventually like any wood. EWP board and batten deteriorates about 1/4" in thickness per century.

    I love the roof lines here. So many monitor barns I think are spoiled by the roof pitch differences or not. Is there a rule you go by? It looks like the lean too's are 4/12 whereas the center structure is between 6 and 8/12.

    I am currently looking at houses and the vinyl siding seems to warp horribly on top of that.. it is humid down here too so they’re just asking for it. Also found asbestos siding on a house from 1948, held up good, doesn’t warp, but I sure as hell don’t want anything to do with it. I love the information you shared regarding oiling the wood to protect it and the 3-4 feet of metal above ground. Question though, can you do a layer of wood and then the metal roofing? Or do you think that might just trap water and lead to mold, it is very windy and humid where I’m at but I’m curious. Thank you for your knowledge and advice on these though, it’s very interesting.

    • @BarnGeek
      @BarnGeek 2 місяці тому

      I assume you are in the southern US? Fortunately there are some great native species in most humid climates that are fairly rot resistant. A lot of our tribe of Barn builders have used cypress and other species in that area with a lot of success. I would recommend joining the BarnGeeks DIY FB group and ask, there are likely to be folks in your neck of the woods who have already built a barn with our plans!

      @@BarnGeek Okay, thank you. And yes, I am in South Texas. It’s hard enough getting a home down here but if I can eventually get some land this will be very helpful. Sounds like we might need to build homes in a similar fashion if we can. Went into another home a couple days ago to find mold all over the bathroom and signs of flooding (they hid it VERY well in the photos).

    Good looking structure and will be there for years🤙 Sorry to be nit picky but thus is a post and beam building not timberframe as you used mechanical fasteners and not mortise and tenons...I only know this because I have built both styles.

    • @BarnGeek
      @BarnGeek 3 місяці тому

      Thank you for your comment, I appreciate it. Timber frames have contained mechanical fasteners for over 100 years. Only recently has there been an attempt to change the meaning of our terms. Even though, ALL timber frames contain some mechanical fasteners of one type or another, so the designation of "post and beam" is meaningless. Post and beam is a very broad category, timber frames are post and beam, as well as stone henge, even a stud frame is a post and beam. It simply means a beam supported by two or more posts. It would be better to call one a mortise and tenon timber frame and the other a metal plate timber frame.

    beams have been made by nailed lumber for years, even 3 2x8's in a garage. Beams were also above an attic floor at one house. It's fairly much a wall, with 2 or 3 rows of 2x12's, both sides. So, in a house built in the 70's, or 60's, the great room, had the beam in the attic ceiling. (So, about 4 or 6 2x12's, with 2x4 studs, that went down and secured the ceiling joists.

    Just finished watching the entire series and so many more of your videos. Great information. The main question I would have is what is the difference between just using your screws or the hardware and bolts? I know that the hardware and bolts add to the look but what is the benefit for a pavilion which is what I'm building or one of your larger barns for those that are building a larger two story structure?

    • @BarnGeek
      @BarnGeek 4 місяці тому

      The screws are strong, but they aren't strong enough to support the tie beam on a two story structure. This is why we use steel plates and bolts for the joints that require them. It is very important to follow the plans and use steel plates where they are called for.
